Apple just announced the iPhone 12, which means it’s time to start speculating about whether you should upgrade from your current model (likely an iPhone X) to the new one. The short answer? You probably shouldn’t, but Apple’s latest phone does have some improvements over its predecessor, so if you have an older model or if you don’t care about getting the latest and greatest from Apple, you might want to consider upgrading. Here are five things to consider when deciding whether to upgrade your iPhone X to the iPhone 12.
The specifications
Display – The iPhone 12 has a 16:9 widescreen display with a retina display, while the iPhone X has a 21.5:9 screen that goes from edge-to-edge. The screen resolution on both devices is 1125×2436, so both will have crisp graphics and text.
Processor – The processor in the new phone is faster and more powerful, but with these specs alone it’s difficult to determine which device will be quicker for each user’s daily tasks.
Front Camera – Front camera resolutions are of course identical, but if you want better selfies, then it might be worth going for an upgrade as far as the rear camera is concerned. Battery Life – Battery life can also vary depending on what you’re doing with your phone. For most people, the battery life of the iPhone 12 will last longer than the one in the iPhone X because of its slightly larger capacity. Price and Storage – In terms of price and storage, there isn’t much difference between them; Apple’s newest phone comes at a higher price tag than their previous model.
Who will get the best out of these phones?
For buyers in a budget, Apple has released two new phones this year – the iPhone 11 at $699 and the iPhone 11 Pro for $999. This lower-priced option is still packed with lots of advanced features including better cameras. If you don’t mind spending more, or don’t want to wait until 2020, you can enjoy all that cutting-edge technology on an iPhone XR for just over $1,000. That’s a much better deal considering it’ll have 8 GB of RAM.
If you’re a working professional who is looking for a stylish device with high levels of security protection so your business can be safe from hacking threats, then going with an expensive model may make sense as these devices are built more sturdy and durable than some other options.
Likewise, if you’re somebody who loves taking selfies and uploading them to social media, a pricier iPhone could also be worth investing in because they have great front-facing cameras. Lastly, if you like upgrading every couple of years for something fresh, then the newer models will likely be more appealing but do keep in mind that your old phone will still work fine!
The design
The iPhone X has a newer design than the iphone 12. There are only two different storage options for the phone, which is 64 GB or 256 GB, unlike other phones which offer various storage options. It also does not have a headphone jack, so if you want to listen to music on your phone, you will need bluetooth headphones or an adapter that plugs into the lightning cable. Its shape is rectangle but has rounded corners and it feels very nice in your hand because of its smoothness and weight.
The older iphone xs feels more angular in your hand and is less sleek due to its sharper edges. Although this may be appealing to some people, many people feel like the iphone x is too big for their hands. It does have a headphone jack and its volume buttons are on the left side instead of the right side as with previous iPhones. The camera quality of both devices is similar; however, there are many differences such as a wider range of colors available with newer software updates on Apple’s newest device.
Upgrading from a previous phone
Before you upgrade your phone, think about whether or not you actually need an upgrade. Why are you looking for a new phone in the first place? What are you going to use it for? If all of your answers were business-related, it might be time for an upgrade. If they were related to personal use, there may not be a need. Chances are if you’re looking at replacing your old phone with the latest version, it’s probably more sensible to upgrade than not.
If money is tight and/or if upgrading your older phone with a newer model would make more sense, then this option could be worth exploring. A lot of people have been able to get good deals on their iPhones from the Apple store because they had their phones replaced under warranty or because they bought them when prices were lowered during Black Friday sales.
So if you’ve got some wiggle room in your budget, and can afford the upfront cost, then we recommend trying out a new iPhone. The price difference between an iPhone 12 and an iPhone X isn’t that significant considering how much better (and useful) the features are on a newer phone.
But before you buy one, ask yourself why you’re buying it: do you really need one or are you just curious? If you only want to try it out, we recommend waiting until September 2020 when the next iPhone release date is expected. On the other hand, if you know that you’re definitely getting rid of your current phone and want something different from what you already have, then go ahead and upgrade!
The storage
The two models of iPhone differ in that the cheapest one, which starts at $250, only has a capacity of 64GB. This is less than what previous models offer. The 8 Plus starts at $299 and offers storage options from 64GB all the way up to 256GB.
Finally, if you’re looking for something expensive with extreme capacity, the top-of-the-line X offers storage in three capacities of 256GB for $999, 512GB for $1,149, or 1TB for a whopping $1,449. For most people with typical needs for their device it probably won’t be worth paying more for extra storage so it’s best to get an 8 Plus with 64 GB or 128 GB.
How long will it last?
The two newest models, the iPhone X and iPhone 12, will last a similar length of time but there are many differences in how they work. The features that make up these phones vary in price and might be a determining factor in which one you should get. These different features range from biometric security to colors. Ultimately, it is going to depend on what you want out of your phone. If you like Apple products, then the iPhone 12 is worth checking out. But if you’re more concerned with getting a cheaper model or having an Android device, then the iPhone X would be better for you.
The camera
For those who are interested in photography, one of the most important specs for a smartphone is its camera. Here, the two devices tie. The rear camera on both models is 12 megapixels and includes optical image stabilization, with an aperture of f/1.8 on both, as well as several modes available on each. However, there are some other factors that should be considered when deciding which phone to purchase. For example, if you want faster face detection or better battery life then you may need to purchase the iPhone 12.
Alternatively, if you plan on using your phone extensively for video editing or gaming then the new model may not be for you. Ultimately, it’s up to your personal preferences and budget to decide which device will work best for you.
Final thoughts
I love my phone and use it every day, but I still don’t know if I’m going to buy an iPhone 12 or not. The price difference is so small that either phone can do just about everything that I need them to do, but my major complaint is having a headphone jack in the newer iPhones.
Bluetooth headphones are great for convenience’s sake, but if you lose your headphones, you’re out of luck because there’s no place on your phone where you can plug them in like on older models. Still thinking about whether or not I should buy one… I think I’ll wait until the new generation comes out next year.
